ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT softball team (9-19) dropped its final two home regular season games of the season to visiting Alfred University (22-8) on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at RIT Field. RIT lost game one, 11-4, then dropped game two, 13-1 in five innings. Alfred ripped 27 hits in the doubleheader.
In game one, Alfred took advantage of a Tiger error in the first inning to score twice with two outs, then broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead. After
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) hit a bases-clearing double to make it 7-4 Saxons, Alfred responded with three more runs in the sixth, and one in the seventh to pull away.
Angela Netta was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead the Saxons. Hana Gross drove in two runs, while Breeal Delgado was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Tori Kramp picked up the win on the mound, pitching 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
LaVoie drove in a career-high three runs for RIT, while
Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and driven in, and
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ) finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Alfred exploded for nine runs in the top of the third inning of game two on seven hits and scored seven unearned runs. Melissa Montano was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's, while Stephanie Arguello was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Delgado drove in three runs. Nicole Hedrick was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI's, and also earned the win on the mound, allowing just five hits, shile striking out three in five innings.
RIT took the lead in the bottom of the first, as Griffin single, advanced on a sacrifice by
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and scored on a wild pitch.
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) and Michelle Tabusz also singled in game two.
RIT is right back in action on Thursday, traveling to face Keuka in a pair of non-league doubleheaders that start at 3 p.m.
