PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT softball team team (7-15) dropped a pair of one-run heartbreakers to host Nazareth (6-18) on a cool, Sunday, Thursday afternoon. RIT lost game one, 2-1 in nine innings, then allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in game to fall, 7-6.
In game two, RIT led 3-0 and 6-3.
Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) led off the top of the fifth inning by slamming her sixth home run of the season to break a scoreless tie. RIT took a 3-0 lead on a bases loaded walk by
Tiffany Gundler (North Adams, MA/Drury ) and a single by
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ). Nazareth tied the game with two in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Griffin gave RIT the 6-3 lead with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, scoring
Sarah Collmus (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) and
Brittani Scharlau (Alexander, NY/Alexander).
Nazareth would score four times in the bottom of the seventh to hand RIT a tough loss. After an error, and two singles made it 6-4, Shauna Bardanis tied the game with a two-run single. Emily Beckley won the game for Nazareth with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sophia Rhoades.
Griffin led RIT with four RBI's. Casey Mathers and Kailey Ritch were each 3-for-4 with a run scored and driven in for the Golden Flyers.
In game one, Collmus and
Tiffany Gundler (North Adams, MA/Drury ) combined to allow just nine hits and an one earned run in 8 2/3 innings for RIT. Collmus struck out three batters, while Gundler allowed just three hits and an unearned run in 4 2/3 innings.
Nazareth took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Bardanis, but RIT responded with a home run from Griffin to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning.
The Golden Flyers won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Shannon Dowling scored on a wild pitch. Mathers threw a complete-game five hitter with nine strikeouts.
Griffin was 2-for-4, while
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was 2-for-3.
Brittney LaVoie (Plattsburgh, NY/Ticonderoga) tallied RIT's other hit.
Griffin finished the afternoon 4-for-8 with two homers and five runs batted in. She improved her batting average to .375 with four homers and 13 RBI's.
RIT is right back in action on Friday, as they host Skidmore in a Liberty League doubleheader that gets underway at 3 p.m.
