Softball earns a split on Tuesday to move to 4-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, FL - The RIT softball team (4-2) earned a split at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday, defeating Geneva College (Pa.) 2-1, then falling to Alverno College (Wis.) 6-4.

Junior pitcher Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) improved to 3-0, scattering four hits, while striking out eight to earn her third straight complete game. Kemp also gave RIT a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning, blasting a solo home run to centerfield.

RIT scored once in the second and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Tori Nadow (Charlton, MA/Shepherd Hill) and Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ) were both 2-for-3. McManus also drove in a run.

Against Alverno, RIT rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4, but Alverno scored twice in the top of the seventh to regain the lead and get the win.

Down 4-1 and with two outs in the fourth, Tiffany Gundler (North Adams, MA/Drury ) singled to drive in Kelsey McManus (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon ), who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) delivered the big blow, a two-run double to centerfield that scored Gundler and Brittany Purcell (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area), tying the game at 4-4.

Chelsea Gulbronson was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple for Alverno. Jamie Villalobos picked up the win, allowing three hits and one earned run over seven innings. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday with contests against Wheaton and Dominican, both out of Illinois. The contest against Wheaton starts at 9 a.m., while the game versus Dominican gets underway at 11 a.m.
