ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Freshman
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) scored her second game winning goal of the season, giving the RIT women's soccer team (7-5-0, 3-2-0) a 1-0 victory over Liberty League foe Clarkson (5-4-2, 0-3-1) on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. The win moves the Tigers into a third-place tie with Vassar, who fell to Skidmore, 1-0.
Ornellas took a perfectly placed cross from
Kiana Richards (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) and beat the Golden Knights goalkeeper Kim Kenline in the 12th minute. Clarkson fired their only shot on goal for the game in the 22nd minute off the foot of Sarah Andres, but
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) made the save. At the end of the first half, RIT held a 6-4 advantage in shots.
The Tigers had two chances to extend the lead in the second half, but Kenline denied them both.
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) deflected a direct kick from 30 yards out but Kenline made the fingertip save. Just over three minutes later, Ornellas found herself in a scrum in front of the goal but couldn't get enough on her left-footed shot to beat the keeper.
The Tigers defense was stout and held Clarkson without a shot for just over the final 36 minutes. The Golden Knights had a chance to draw even with nine minutes left to play, but were whistled for being offside.
For the game, RIT out shot Clarkson 12-6 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kenline made nine stops and Murray made one save while earning her fourth shutout of the season.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 as they host Bard at 4 p.m.
