ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's hockey team kicked off the 2012-13 season with an 8-1 win over the University of Ottawa in exhibition action in front of 1,934 fans at Ritter Arena on Saturday night. Eight different Tigers scored goals in the win.
Bryan Potts (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Markham Waxers) had a goal and two assists to lead RIT.
RIT outshot the Gee Gee's 45-22. The Tigers went 4-for-8 with the man advantage, while Ottawa was 0-for-4 on the power play.
Josh Watson (Lititz, PA/Powell River Kings) got the start in net allowing one goal and making 11 saves. Ken McLean played the final 27:04, finshing with 10 saves.
The Tigers led 2-0 after the first period, 5-1 after the second and tacked three goals in the third period for the 8-1 win.
Jeff Smith (Spokane, WA/Tri-City Storm) got RIT on the board first when he intercepted a clearing pass by the Gee Gee's and ripped a wrist shot into the top right corner for a 1-0 RIT lead at 2:56 of the first.
Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO/Green Bay Gamblers) made it 2-0 RIT with a power play goal at 7:16 of the first off assists from McGowan and
Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings).
Maxime Chamberland scored Ottawa's lone goal at 2:23 of the second period off assists from Jean-Bernard Voyer and Alexandre Touchette.
RIT broke the game open with three straight goals to close out the second period.
Potts tallied an even strength goal at 3:43 of the second to give RIT a 3-1 lead.
Adam Hartley (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) and Andy Miller had the assists on the play.
Garbowsky made it 4-1 RIT at 4:15 of the second with a power play goal on assists from
Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers) and McGowan.
Hartley opened the Tigers lead up to 5-1 at 12:56 of the second with an even strength goal off assists from
Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars) and
Brad Shumway (Lafayette, CO/Chicago Steel).
Hamburg, Lynch and Miller each added goals in the third to give the Tigers an 8-1 win.
Lynch and Rajan Sidhu had the assists on Hamburg's goal at 13:59 of the third period.
Potts and Shumway had the assists on the Lynch goal at 16:16 of the third, and Hamburg and
Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) added assists on the Miller goals at 19:23.
The Tigers open the regular season next Thursday when RIT travels to famed Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on the No. 3 Wolverines at 7:35 p.m.
