Women's soccer travels to William Smith to face Herons in Liberty League semifinals

ROCHESTER, NY -- The third seeded RIT women's soccer team will face second seeded William Smith College in the semifinals of the 2012 Liberty League Women's Soccer TOurnament on Thursday, November 1 at 2:30 pm at Boswell Field on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

The Tigers earned the third seed into the tournament after finishing the Liberty League regular season with a 6-2-0 record and 12 points. The Tigers are 11-5-1 overall and are 5-0-1 in their last six games, including a win over previously unbeaten and No. 4 ranked Ithaca College on Saturday. It was the first time the Tigers had beaten the Bombers since 1995. It is the second straight trip for the Tigers to the conference semifinals, losing to Skidmore in last year's semifinals.

The Herons, ranked twelfth in this week's NSCAA Div. III Women's poll, comes into Thursday's action with a 12-2-2 overall record.

The winner advances to the Liberty League Championship game on Saturday, November 3 and will face the winner between Rensselaer and Union who play on Thursday in Troy, New York.

RIT comes into Thursday averaging 1.59 goals per game, good for fifth in the conference, and have outscored their opponents 27-13 on the season. Despote missing seven games, sophomore Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) leads the team in scoring with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Freshman Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) is second on the team in scoring with nine points on four goals and an assist. Two of Ornellas' four goals have been game winners. Jaimie Lewandowski (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and Ashlene Potter (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) each have three goals on the season.

Defensively, RIT allows 0.76 goals per game, good for third in the conference. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 10-2 during the six-game unbeaten streak. Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) has played the majority of the minutes in goal for RIT, posting a 10-5-1 record, a 0.83 goals against average, an .838 save percentage and has six shut outs on the season.

William Smith enters Thursday averaging 2.16 goals per game, second in the Liberty League, outscoring their opponents 34-8 on the season. Madeline Buckley leads William Smith in scoring with 22 points on nine goals and four assists. Whitney Frary is second on the team in scoring with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. Renee Jensen is third on the team in scoring with 19 points on five goals and nine assists.

Defensively, the Herons are tops in the conference, allowing a paltry 0.48 goals per game. Chelsea Dunay has seen the majority of the minutes in net for William Smith, posting a 12-2-2 record, a 0.49 goals against average, a .877 save percentage and has eight shutouts on the season.

These two teams met back on October 3 with William Smith winning 1-0. Olivia Zitoli scored the game's lone goal in the 79th minute off an assist from Renee Jensen. RIT fired six shots on the game and Murray finished with eight saves. RIT is 0-30-1 all-time versus William Smith.
