Women's soccer loses at No. 10 William Smith on late goal

GENEVA, NY -- The RIT (6-5-0, 2-2-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team fell to No. 10 William Smith College (8-2-1, 3-1-0 Liberty League) 1-0 in Liberty League action from Cozzens Field on Wednesday afternoon.

William Smith junior Olivia Zitoli notched the game-winner for the Herons in the 79th minute to secure the 1-0 victory.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, RIT generated a number of scoring opportunities in the second half. One coming just 5:07 into the second stanza. Freshman Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) blasted a shot on goal from 10 yards away, but William Smith goalkeeper Chelsea Dunay was there for the diving save.

With 12 minutes left in the match, Renee Jensen fired a shot that banged off the left post. Sophomore Brenna Kincaid collected the rebound and fired on goal, but Jamie Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) stepped in at the last second to save the ball off the line, keeping the game scoreless, but giving the Herons a corner kick.

On the ensuing corner kick, Jensen sent a ball towards RIT's back post. The cross took one hop and then Zitoli sent the ball through the crowd in front of the goal and into the back of the net.

The Tigers had an opportunity to net the equalizer with just over two minutes left in regulation. After a foul on the Herons, Jackie Jacobson (Westlake, CA/Westlake) lofted a free kick from just outside the Heron's penalty box for RIT. Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) was right in front and tipped the ball on net, but Dunay made the save.

The Tigers also earned a corner kick in the :10 seconds. Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) sent a ball into the Wiliam Smith zone, but the RIT attempt was punched away by Dunay to preserve the William Smith shutout.

The Herons held a 17-6 lead in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners. Murray played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tigers and finished with eight saves. Dunay finished with with five saves for the win.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when the Tigers host Clarkson University in Liberty League action at 2 pm on Tiger Stadium
