ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (12-7, 4-2 Empire 8) extended its winning streak to six games after defeating Ithaca, 3-2 in game one, then had the streak snapped by the Bombers (14-6, 4-2 Empire 8), 8-1 in game two on Sunday afternoon at RIT Field.
Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when
Allee Emmi (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) crushed a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for her first collegiate home run off Ithaca starter Allison Greaney.
Cole opened with four no-hit innings to start the game, but got into trouble in the fifth inning, allowing a pair of singles and a hit batter. She pitched out of a second and third with no out, and bases loaded, one-out jam, striking out Annmarie Forenza, Julie Vincent, and Jen Biondi to preserve the shutout.
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) gave RIT a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning, slamming her first collegiate home run, a towering shot over the fence down the left field line.
Ithaca loaded the bases once again in the sixth inning, and this time got on the board. With one out, Greaney lifted a deep fly to right field that drove in Rachel Dell'Orto to make the score 2-1 RIT. Dell'Orto was caught off the bag, and had to go back to third to tag up, but was able to score.
RIT tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, with two outs, as
Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) doubled to left and scored on a single by Megan O'Connell.
Cole picked up her seventh win of the year, allowing five hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort. She struck out seven and walked two.
Greaney fell to 5-2 for Ithaca, allowing seven hits, walking two, and striking out seven.
Before Cole allowed the fifth inning hits, RIT pitchers had not allowed a hit over its previous 14 1/3 innings. Cole retired the final 13 batters she faced in game one, a 4-0 win over Utica on Saturday, while Kemp no-hit the Pioneers in game two.
RIT struck first in game two, but the Bombers responded with three runs in the second and four in the third to take a commanding lead and chase Kemp, who lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, four of which were earned. Cole came in and allowed just three hits and a run over the final 4 2/3 innings.
Yesterday, Kemp threw RIT's first no-hitter in 10 years, striking out a career-high 13 batters in a 2-0 win over Utica.
Britt Lillie earned the win on the mound for the Bombers, throwing six innings of scoreless relief. She was also 2-for-3 with a long home run and three RBIs. Cariaane D'Alessandro was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, and a run batted in.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Brockport that gets underway at 3 p.m.
