ROCHESTER, NY – Senior outfielder
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) drove in the go-ahead runs in both ends of a doubleheader, leading the RIT baseball team (16-16, 5-7 Empire 8) to come-from-behind 4-2 and 9-3 victories over Utica (7-25, 2-10 Empire 8) on Thursday afternoon.
In game one, Dornes hit a two-run double to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. RIT would tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and stolen base for RIT, as the game started with the score 1-0 Utica in the top of the third inning. The contest was started on April 25, but halted after two innings because of inclement weather.
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing seven hits and two runs, with one strike out.
Charles Yarrington (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) pitched the final two innings, allowing just one run for his first collegiate save.
In game two, RIT scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from a 3-2 deficit. Dornes gave RIT the lead for good with a two-run single to right field. Campbell stole home to make it 5-3.
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) drove in a run with a ground out to give RIT a 6-3 lead. #Jeffrey Creagh singled in Hughes for a 7-3 lead, then
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) capped off the inning by crushing his second home run of the season, a blast over the right field fence to close the scoring.
Hughes continued his strong play, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base.
Chris Brol (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana) and Bradley were each 2-for-4. Brol also scored twice, while Bradley drove in a pair of runs.
Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) picked up his second win of the season in relief, allowing one run over the final two innings.
Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) started for the Tigers and pitched well, allowing just four hits and two runs, while striking out three in five innings.
Dornes drove in four runs in the doubleheader for RIT, giving him a team-best 31 on the season.
Utica starting pitcher Adrian Jackson pitched four scoreless innings, before the bullpen allowed nine runs over the final two frames. Angel Zapata was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI for the Pioneers, who have lost eight straight games.
RIT is right back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Ithaca to play the Bombers in a pair of Empire 8 contests at 1 p.m.
