Softball splits conference doubleheader against Elmira

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT softball team (15-13, 4-4 Empire 8) split a doubleheader against Empire 8 foe Elmira (11-4, 4-4 Empire 8) on a sunny, breezy Wednesday afternoon at RIT Field.  Both the Tigers and Soaring Eagles remain tied for fourth in conference play.

In game one, RIT broke the contest open with six runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Freshman Emily Courtney (Berlin, CT/Kingswood-Oxford) opened the scoring with a two-run double, while Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Pompey) landed the big blow, a three-run triple that cleared the bases with two outs. 

Elmira responded with three runs in the top of the third, as Brittnee McGuire doubled to score a pair of runs and scored on a passed ball.

RIT hurler Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) picked up her eighth win of the season, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, while striking out four batters i the complete-game effort.

McPherson tied a career-high by going 4-for-4 in the win for the Tigers.

In game two, the Tigers could not solve Elmira pitcher Katie Hobson, who limited RIT to just four singles.  RIT had the tying run on with no outs in the top of the seventh inning, but could not score.

Elmira scored in the both the second and third innings.  Lauryn DePaul was 2-for-2 with a triple and run scored. 

RIT pitcher Brittany Kemp (Dansville, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) was solid in defeat, allowing just three hits, while striking out seven batters. 

RIT returns to action on Saturday, as they host Alfred in a pair of crucial Empire 8 contests that get underway at 1 p.m.  RIT will honor its senior class between games one and two.
