Women's soccer blanks Elmira; Earns spot in Empire 8 Tournament

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team clicnhed a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament with a 4-0 win over Elmira College on Saturday. Senior Danielle Painter (Mililani, HI/Mililani) scored two goals for the Tigers who improve to 8-4-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the Empire 8.

RIT broke a scoreless tie in the 38th minute on a goal by sophomore Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Senior Shireen Irani (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports Academy) got in behind an Elmira defender and took the ball to the end-line. She angled a pass back across the Elmira goal that Vakiener ran onto and one-timed into the open net.

Just after halftime freshman Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel)' header off a cross from Monica Cook (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) gave RIT a 2-0 lead. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

In the 65th minute Painter scored her first off a pass from Kim Sisti (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). She worked the ball down the sideline and got behind her defender. Sisti fed a pass to Painter who one-timed her shot into the upper corner.

Painter was fouled inside the Elmira penalty box. She calmly stepped up and converted the penalty kick for her second of the game and third of the season.

RIT out shot the Soaring Eagles 21-5. The Tigers took five corner kicks to just one for Elmira who fall to 3-11-1 overall.

Junior Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) picked up her eighth win of the season and her sixth shut out making three saves.

RIT returns to action next Tuesday, October 26 when they travel to Fredonia to take on the Blue Devils at 4 pm.
