ROCHESTER, NY --  The RIT men's soccer team allowed three goals in the first 18 minutes of action, falling to visiting St. Lawrence University (4-1-0) 3-2 in non-league action on Friday. The loss drops the Tigers to 2-3-1 on the season.

It took St. Lawrence 1:26 to get on the board when Sam DeMello headed a ball in off a pass from Alex Laird to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

James Stewart made it 2-0 St. Lawrence when his attempted service from the left end-line drifted into the top left corner. Dan Marvin did much the same thing from the right side in the 18th minute to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

RIT finally got organized and began mounting some offense late in the first half. Freshman Matt Broedel (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) took a nice through-ball from Bret Dietz (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) and scored inside the last minute of play to cut the Saints lead to 3-1.

The Tigers came out and played much more aggressively in the second half, firing seven shots. Chris Somers (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) had a golden opportunity inside the first  minute of play to pull the Tigers to within a goal. He had a wide open net to score, but his shot bended just wide.

RIT finally broke through with 1:17 to play in regulation off a free kick. Somers sent a ball into the penalty area that St. Lawrence keeper, Brian Abernathy made the save on. But, he juggled the ball and it came free right to Sean Coots (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) who headed it into the net making it 3-2.

The Tigers had a chance with 35 seconds to go off a corner kick but the attempt came up short and was cleared out of danger by the Saints.

Both teams fired 10 shots on the day. St. Lawrence took five corner kicks to RIT's four. Bora Turgut (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) took the loss for RIT. Ben Frazier (Westminster, MD/Westminster) relieved Turgut and made three saves. Brian Abernathy picked up his forth win for the Saints.

RIT will look to take the momentum from the second half into Saturday when they host Clarkson University. Kick-off is at 2 pm on RIT Field.
