Softball gains road split at Alfred

ALFRED, NY –
The RIT softball team (11-15, 3-5 Empire 8) earned a split at Alfred University (21-3, 5-3 Empire 8) on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one, 8-5, while winning game two, 4-3.  RIT is tied for fourth in the Empire 8 standings with Nazareth.  RIT and Nazareth will play a doubleheader at RIT Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In game one, RIT trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, before roaring back with five runs to take a 5-4 lead.  Alfred answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-5.

Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Pompey) (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) hit a two-run home run to cut the Alfred lead to 5-2.  Lauren Stockli (Derry, NH/Derry) (Derry, NH/Derry) drove in a run with a single to make it 5-3.  Jen Hayden (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) tied the game with a two-run, two-out single.

Jessica Figallo put Alfred up to stay with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame off of RIT starter Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) (Alden, NY/Alden).  Cole allowed four earned runs in five innings to take the loss, snapping a three-game winning streak.

McPherson was 2-for-4 with her team-leading fifth home run of the season.  #Allee Emmi (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse)# (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

In game two, RIT scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, with the big two-run hit coming off the bat of Jessica French (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton Central) (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton).

The Tigers snapped a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brie Raymond (Glenfield, NY/South Lewis) (Glenfield, NY/South Lewis) scored on a error.  Raymond was pinch-running for Lisa Fronczak (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), who doubled earlier in the frame.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Hamel (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) picked up her second win of the season on the mound, allowing eight hits while striking out five and walking none.  She has walked just three batters in 44.2 innings this season.

McPherson was 2-for-3 in game two with a run scored.

RIT returns home to host Nazareth on Sunday at 1 p.m.  RIT will be celebrating senior day.
