ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT softball team (10-14) earned its second doubleheader sweep in two days, defeating Medaille College (13-15), 6-3 and 10-1 at RIT Field on Thursday afternoon. RIT has now won four straight contests.
Sophomore hurler
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) (Alden, NY/Alden) shined on the mound and at the plate. In game one, Cole threw a complete-game five-hitter, carrying a shutout into the seventh inning. She allowed three unearned runs in the final frame. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate in game one with a double and two runs scored. In game two, Cole was 2-for-4 with a run scoring double and ended the game with a towering grand slam to left field in the sixth inning. The home run was Cole's third of the season and seventh of her Tiger career.
Freshman hurler #
Mary Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes)# (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) picked up her first collegiate win in game two, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out two. She pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.
The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning of game one , breaking open a close game.
Senior
Jenna Mausolf (Hudson, NY/Hudson) (Hudson, NY/Hudson) ripped a run-scoring triple, scored and walked twice in game one.
Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Pompey) (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) and
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) teammed up for perhaps the defensive play of the season to end the sixth inning of game one. With two runners on, Medaille's Amanda Westling hit a grounder through the hole on the left side that shortstop McPherson lunged for and grabbed. In one motion, McPherson fired towards third base to Tabisz who was backpedaling to cover. Tabisz caught the throw bare-handed and stepped on third to force the runner out.
McPherson slammed her team-leading fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give RIT a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. She also doubled and scored in the fifth inning.
Mausolf ripped two more hits in game two, while
Sarah Hamel (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a run batted in.
Katie Fitzpatrick (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) was also 2-for-3.
Freshman
Morgan Stearns (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) (Springboro, PA/Conneault Valley) slammed her first collegiate hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.
RIT returns to conference play on Saturday, as they travel to Alfred to play the Saxons in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
