ELMIRA, NY - The RIT women's soccer team (6-6-3, 3-5-0 Empire 8) was officially eliminated from Empire 8 playoff contention after losing to Elmira (6-9-0, 3-5-0 Empire 8), 3-2 on Saturday at the soggy and rain-drenched Campus Field.
Emily Young (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) and
Kristen Denninger (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) scored for the Tigers, who out-shot Elmira, 14-12.
Elmira led 1-0 after the first half of play on a goal by Rachel Bromson in the 12th minute. Bromson scored her second goal of the game to give Elmira a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute. Both goals were assisted by Kristyn O'Rourke.
Young tallied her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute to cut the Elmira lead in half. She received a pass from
Allyson Pisher (Holley, NY/Holley) and ripped a shot just inside the left goal post.
Elmira came right back 1:33 later, as Caitlin Eno headed in a crossing pass from Erin Pruess to make the score 3-1.
Denninger made it a one-goal game once again in the 84th minute, sliding a low shot past Elmira goalkeeper Megan Lowe to the right corner of the cage. The goal was Denninger's fourth of the season, tying her for the team lead with
Kendra Shelters (Lyons, NY/Lyons).
Lowe made seven saves in the win for Elmira. RIT goalkeeper
Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) stopped three shots in the loss for RIT.
The Tigers will play their final regular season home match on Tuesday, against University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
