ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women's soccer team won its third straight Empire 8 contest, shutting out Alfred University, 3-0. This marks the fifth shut out of the season for the Tigers, who are now 6-4-3 overall, and 3-3-0 in Empire 8 play.
RIT out shot the Saxons 26-4, with 11 shots being on goal, and took nine corner kicks to Alfred's two. The Tigers committed 10 fouls to just eight for the Saxons.
Kristen Denninger (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) gave RIT a 1-0 lead with her goal in the 27th minute.
Monica Cook (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) crossed the ball from the end line, and with no defenders covering the back post, Denninger headed the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.
Denninger gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with her unassisted goal in the 49th minute. She chipped the ball over the Alfred goalkeeper's head from five-yards out. This was Denninger's second tally of the game, and her third on the season.
Cook gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead with her unassisted goal in the 77th minute. Cook was outside the box, where she fired a shot over the goalkeeper's head. This marks her first goal of the season.
The defense for RIT was solid, helping goalkeeper
Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) earn her fifth shut out of the season, and third straight Empire 8 victory. The Tigers only allowed only four shots during the game, only one being on net.
Alyssa Henkel (Newark, NY/Newark) played the final 35 minutes of the match, securing her part of the shut out victory.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Empire 8 rival Nazareth College, who are ranked third in the conference.
