ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT baseball team swept a pair of games from Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher (23-11, 9-5 E8) on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won game one 3-2 in eight innings and took game two 4-3. The Tigers have now won five straight games and 15 of their last 16, improving to 20-12 overall and pull into a tie with St. John Fisher for second in the Empire 8 with a 9-5 mark.
The Tigers took an early lead in game #1 on a RBI single by
Geoff Dornes (Landisville, PA/Hempfiled) (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) in the bottom of the first inning.
Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a balk by Fisher starter Chad King. Dornes drove home George with a solid single, driving in his team-leading 32nd run of the season.
For George it was his 42nd run scored of the season giving him sole possession of first place on RIT's all-time single-season runs list.
The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. John Quartironi scored on a RBI double by Jason Nevada. After he stole third Nevada scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad King giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers would respond with a run in the bottom of the third, tying the score at 2-2 on a two-out RBI single by
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili).
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) ripped a double with two outs in the inning and came home on a single by Culotta.
RIT had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and the bases loaded
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) flied out to right field ending the threat and sending the game into extra innings.
After a 1-2-3 inning by Dornes the Tigers won the game on a passed ball by Cardinals' catcher David Convertini, plating Culotta from third.
Dornes went all eight innings for RIT, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked only one batter, winning his third game of the season.
Justin Lutes took the loss for Fisher going 1 2/3 inning in relief allowing one run on two hits. Chad King got the start for Fisher going six innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
The Tigers jumped on Fisher in the second game, scoring runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, taking a 4-0 lead.
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt),
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg),
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, NY) and
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had RBI for the Tigers to give them their cushion.
Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia) (Moravia, NY) crusied through the first five innings of the game for RIT but allowed a run in the sixth and two in the seventh but came away with hi seventh win of the season. He struck out three and walked two.
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) got the final two outs in the seventh for his first save of the season.
These same two team will meet again on Sunday for another double-header beginning at 12 pm.
