ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (6-6) dropped a pair of games to #19 University of Rochester (18-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the RIT Field. The Tigers fell by a score of 11-2 in game one and lost game two, 5-4. University of Rochester has now won 11 straight games.
In game one, U of R broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing, three-run double by Blayne Fuke.
Steve Just led the Yellowjackets by going 3-for-3 with a double, home run, three runs scored and five runs batted in. Jay Jay Vanderstyne and Andy Cannon had two hits apiece.
Luke Brocks picked up the win, allowing five hits and two runs in six innings.
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) drove in both RIT runs with a double off the center field fence.
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Kyle Desrosiers (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) (North Attleboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) also scored.
The Tigers went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning and 4-0 after three innings in game two, before Rochester came back with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game and a run in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.
Geoff Dornes (Landisville, PA/Hempfiled) (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) gave RIT a quick 1-0 lead with a double that plated
Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY/Walton), who walked and stole second. Tosh then hit his second two-run double of the day two batters later, scoring
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Dornes, giving RIT a 3-0 edge.
The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, as
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport)'s (Brockport, NY/Brockport) fielder's choice ground ball scored Culotta.
Rochester chipped away with a pair of runs in the next two innings to tie the game. After getting out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, the Yellowjackets took the lead in the top of the seventh, as Steve Just's bloop single plated Dan Brien with the winning run.
Blair Veenema shut the door on the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh. He picked up his fourth win of the year, striking out two in 1 1/3 innngs. Steve Guzski pitched well in relief for the Yellowjackets allowing just one run in 4 2/3 innings.
Dave Kloc hit a two-run triple for Rochester.
Culotta had three hits for RIT. George stole three bases.
Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) got the start on the mound, allowing just one hit and two earned runs in four innings of work.
Culotta went 5-for-7 on the day, raising his season average from .400 to .469.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, as they host Buffalo State in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
