, NY The RIT men's basketball team (13-11, 7-8 Empire 8) concluded its 2007-08 home schedule with a 76-74 win over Alfred University (2-21, 1-13 Empire 8) on Tuesday evening at the Clark Gym.

The win guarantees RIT its 17th straight season with a .500 or better record.

The Tigers had trouble shaking the pesky Saxons, who hung close and tied the game at 48 with 9:52 left.  A 3-pointer by Rick Whitwood (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) gave the Tigers the lead that they would not relinquish.

Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) led the Tigers with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.  He was 7-for-11 from the floor and made 5-of-6 from the line in the second half.  Mark Carson (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) recorded his 12th double-double of the season, with 17 points and 10 boards.

Nate Korinchak (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) had seven points, six boards and four assists.  He also drilled some clutch free-throws down the stretch.  Whitwood added nine points and three dimes.

The Tigers shot 21-for-27 from the line in the contest and out-rebounded Alfred 38-33.

The Saxons drilled 14 3-point baskets in 31 attempts.  Alfred had an assist on each of its first 16 field goals.

Carl Embury led the Saxons with 15 points.  Ellis Walsh had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Ron Smith hit four 3-pointers en route to a 14 point performance.

RIT led 38-30 at the half, on the strength of a 10-0 run midway through the half.  Nate Rizzo (Sherill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherill) scored the final five points of the run.

Seven of Alfred's nine field goals over the opening 20 minutes were 3-pointers.

At halftime, senior guard Colin Roy (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) was honored with the 2008 Steven King Award.

The Tigers conclude the regular season at Elmira on Sunday.  The contest starts at 4 p.m.
