BUFFALO, N.Y. – The RIT Men's Hockey team fell, 4-2, at Canisius in Atlantic Hockey action, Saturday.
Canisius scored the lone goal of the first period, before back-to-back goals by senior forward
Philippe Jacques and junior forward
Christian Catalano put the Tigers on top midway through the second. The Golden Griffins scored three unanswered goals, tying the game with 5:38 left in the second before taking the lead for good 1:36 into the third and tacking on a empty-netter in the final minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Canisius finished a rush at 9:05 of the first to open the scoring. Carter Patterson centered a puck from the right corner to FJ Buteau trailing the play in the slot for a finish over Krbecek's glove.
RIT evened the score at 4:59 of the second. Sophomore defenseman
Tristan Allen sent a long pass out of the RIT zone to Jacques at the opposite blue line. Jacques fought through a defender in the left faceoff circle to tip a shot under Petter Wickstrom Stumer's pads.
RIT took the lead at 9:53. A Canisius player lost his footing in the slot while trying to clear the RIT zone. Senior forward
Tyler Mahan one-timed a loose puck at the point that popped up off Stumer's pads in the crease for a short finish by Catalano.
Canisius tied game with 5:38 left in the second. Cole Miller stole a puck in the neutral zone along the left boards and beat the Tiger defense back to snap a shot under Krbecek's glove.
Canisius retook a 3-2 lead 1:36 into the third period. Grant Porter took a long outlet pass in the neutral zone and ran into three defenders in the RIT slot before dropping a pass back to Killian Kiecker-Olson, who was open for a wrist shot over Krbecek's glove.
The Golden Griffins closed the game with an empty-net goal with 46.5 seconds on the clock.
GAME NOTES
- Krbecek finished with 19 saves as RIT ended the night with a 29-23 advantage in shots on goal.
- Catalano notched his team-leading 13th point of the season.
- Allen added his team-leading ninth assist of the year.
- RIT split the AHA home-and-home series after earning a 3-1 victory over the Golden Griffins on Friday night at the Gene Polisseni Center. The teams will also meet two more times on Jan. 16 in Buffalo and Jan. 17 in Rochester.
