POTSDAM, N.Y. – RIT first-year forward
Evan Konyen scored two goals but it was host Clarkson earning a 3-2 victory over the Tigers, Monday.
Konyen tallied in the closing minutes of the first period but Clarkson answered with two goals in the second and another in the opening minute of the third for a 3-1 lead. Konyen scored again with just over two minutes left in regulation, but the Golden Knights held on for the one-goal win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT scored the lone goal of the first period. Konyen dropped a pass from below the goal line to senior forward Austin Brimmer in the left faceoff circle and skated around the goal to tuck a return pass from Brimmer inside the right post with 2:30 on the clock.
- Clarkson evened the score 1:33 into the second after a Tiger defenseman misplayed a puck that deflected off sophomore goaltender Jakub Krbecek's pads and ended up on Luka Sukovic's stick in the middle of the slot. Sukovic fed Ryan Bottrill in front of the left post for an open finish behind Krbecek.
- Bottrill found the net again to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead at 8:21 of the second, skating from the left faceoff circle across the slot to score on a wrist shot over Krbeck's glove.
- Clarkson took a two-goal lead 47 seconds into the third, winning an offensive zone faceoff to the end boards where Jared Mangan fed Owen Van Steensel in the slot for a one-timer past Krbecek.
- RIT got one back with 2:13 left in regulation, redirecting a shot by senior defenseman Xavier Lapointe from the left point in the slot through a crowd in front of the Clarkson crease.
- Clarkson fended off the Tigers in the closing minutes, including killing a power play after an interference penalty with 2:00 on the clock to earn the victory.
