WINTHROP, Mass. – Former standout RIT goaltender Jared DeMichiel was inducted into the Atlantic Hockey Hall of Honor, announced Tuesday.
The Atlantic Hockey Association is celebrating its 20th season of competition in 2022-23 with the recognition of the top 20 players from the conference's first two decades. This distinguished group will also comprise the first class of inductees into the Atlantic Hockey Hall of Honor. The honorees will be revealed weekly during the 2022-23 regular season with the final player revealed on Feb. 21.
"It's a great honor and privilege to be selected as one of the top 20 players in Atlantic Hockey Association's first 20 seasons," DeMichiel said. "Hockey is a team game and a goalie is only as good as the team playing in front of him. I was lucky enough to be a part of a very special program at RIT with unreal teammates and an elite coaching staff. Congratulations to all of the other players selected and thank you to the voters!"
The Harwinton, Conn., native joined the Tigers as a first-year in 2006-07, which was RIT's first year in Atlantic Hockey and saw limited action over his first two years as RIT captured the AHA regular season title in its first season and finished as the conference runner-up in 2007-08.
DeMichiel established himself as one of the Tigers' primary goaltenders as a junior and helped backstop RIT to the first of three consecutive Atlantic Hockey regular season crowns. He finished the season with a 13-6-0 record that included a 12-4-0 mark in conference play as the Orange and Black reached the semifinals of the AHA Postseason.
He capped his career with one of the top seasons by an RIT goaltender in 2009-10. In conference play, DeMichiel posted an Atlantic Hockey-record 21 wins and a 1.78 goals-against average to win the AHA Goaltending Championship. Overall, he finished with a 27-10-1 record, a 2.09 GAA and a .921 save percentage. His 920 saves that season are a school record and included 63 stops in two games at the East Regional against No. 1 Denver (39) and New Hampshire (24) to send RIT to Detroit for the Frozen Four. DeMichiel earned All-Atlantic Hockey, AHA All-Tournament honors and NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player accolades for his efforts that season.
"Jared was a great competitor and when the game was on the line, he would come up big," RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson said. "Nothing was ever given to him and he had to work for everything through his four years but all of his hard work paid off his senior year. Jared fit in so well with our team and was able to keep things light in our biggest games. It was reassuring to have him back in the net when the game was on the line. He gave us a chance to win every night."
Following a brief professional career, DeMichiel made the jump to the coaching ranks when he was hired as an assistant coach for the first-year program at Division III Nazareth College in 2011. He spent three years with the Division III Golden Flyers before a two-year stint at St. Lawrence (2014-16) with head coach Greg Carvel. DeMichiel joined Carvel's staff at Massachusetts in 2016 and spent six seasons in Amherst (2016-22), where was behind the bench for two Hockey East championships, a national runner-up finish in 2019 and the Minutemen's national championship run in 2021. He is currently in his first year as the associate head coach at Michigan State.
