ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT first-year forward
Tyler Mahan scored three goals – all his first in a Tiger uniform – in Saturday's 8-5 victory over Union in the 15th-annual Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend game, played at the Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mahan opened the scoring with 10:17 left in the first period off a turnover at the top of the Dutchmen zone before sophomore forward Grady Hobbs made it a 2-0 game off a feed from junior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata with 5:30 on the clock.
- Sophomore forward Carter Wilkie scored a power-play goal 50 seconds into the second to kick off a seven-goal period, followed by Mahan's second of the game 1:20 later for a 4-0 RIT lead.
- Union got on the board with two goals in 32 seconds for a 4-2 score with 14:47 on the clock.
- Senior defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro scored on a blast from the right face-off circle with 6:07 left in the period before first-year forward Simon Isabelle tallied his first collegiate goal on a short finish off a great feed by junior forward Cody Laskosky 27 seconds later for a 6-2 lead. The Dutchmen got one back on the power play with 2:57 left to make it a 6-3 game into the third period.
- Union pulled back within two, 6-4, with 13:40 left in regulation, but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
- Mahan completed the hat-trick with an empty-net tally with 3:34 left in regulation before senior forward Caleb Moretz closed the night with a tally with 1:49 left in regulation.
GAME NOTES
- Mahan logged the first RIT hat-trick since Will Calverley scored three goals in a 6-4 victory over visiting Mercyhurst on Jan. 28, 2021. He also registered the first three-goal performance by an RIT first-year player since Andrew Rinaldi netted three in a 7-4 win over visiting Holy Cross on Nov. 1, 2019.
- RIT earned its first Division I era victory over Union after going 0-7-1 in the teams' first eight meetings, including a 4-3 setback in Schenectady to open the season two weeks ago (Oct. 1).
- Tiger sophomore goaltender Tommy Scarfone was credited with 27 saves to earn his second victory of the season.
- RIT owns a 14-9-4 record at Blue Cross Arena during the Division 1 era. The Tigers are also 6-5-4 during the Brick City game, including a 4-0-3 record in its last seven trips downtown.
- RIT converted two of four power-play attempts while killing four of five Dutchmen extra-man opportunities.
- Hansen-Bukata finished with a career-high three points – all assists. The reigning Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week currently leads the Tigers with six points after notching a game-winning goal and two assists in last weekend's conference sweep of Army.
- Nicholson finished with two assists for his fourth-career multi-point game and first since a two-assist outing in a 5-1 win over visiting Sacred Heart on Feb. 1, 2022.
- Gonsalves totaled two assists for his second multi-point game of the season after also logging a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win over Army last Friday (Oct. 7).
- Cassaro notched his second goal in as many games after also scoring in last Saturday's 4-1 win over Army (Oct. 8).
- RIT scored the most goals since earning an 8-5 victory over No. 9 Clarkson at the GPC on Nov. 27, 2020.
