Men's Hockey shutout by Army, 6-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT men's hockey team fell to visiting Army, 6-0, in Atlantic Hockey action, Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army scored the lone goal of the first period. Senior defenseman Marshal Plunkett took a feed in the slot from the left wing and jammed a shot under Tiger junior goalie Kolby Matthews' pads with 11:24 on the clock.
  • The Black Knights took a 2-0 lead with 16:22 left in the second on a shot from the point by junior defenseman Anthony Firriolo that found the back of the net through a crowd in front of the crease.
  • Army took advantage of a seven-minute power play awarded in the final seconds of the second after RIT senior forward Nick Bruce was hit with a five-minute contact to the head major and a game misconduct along with a two-minute tripping minor. Army scored twice in the first two minutes of the third on goals by junior forward Brett Abdelnour and senior forward Eric Butte to build a 4-0 lead with 18:03 on the clock.
  • Junior forward Patrick Smyth scored in the low slot through Matthews' pads for a 5-0 lead with 9:57 remaining before sophomore forward Eric Huss fed junior forward Kendrick Frost in the slot for a goal with 6:57 on the clock to close the game. 
GAME NOTES
  • Army finished the game 3-for-6 on the power play.
  • Matthews totaled 18 saves as the Black Knights out-shot the Tigers, 24-20.
  • RIT opened Atlantic Hockey play this season with a 4-3 win at Army (Oct. 8) before tying, 2-2, the following day.
