Men's Hockey comes up short at Canisius, 5-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – RIT senior forward Jake Hamacher and junior forward Elijah Gonsalves each notched a goal and an assist but it was host Canisius earning a 5-2 victory over the Tigers in Atlantic Hockey action, Friday, at the LECOM Harborcenter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first six goals of the game were all power-play tallies, while Canisius tacked on a short-handed tally to close the night.
  • Canisius opened the scoring with 14:55 left in the first period before RIT responded with a pair of goals in the next 10 minutes.
  • Hamacher set up Gonsalves for his first of the season with 7:53 on the clock before notching his first of the year off an assist from senior forward Will Calverley with 5:36 remaining in the period.
  • Canisius scored 19 seconds into the second period and again nine minutes later to take a 3-2 lead it would carry into the third.
  • Jackson Decker scored his second goal of the game 1:15 into the third period to push the Golden Griffins to a 4-2 lead before Keaton Mastrodonato closed the scoring with 1:18 left in regulation.

GAME NOTES

  • Canisius finished the night 4-for-6 on the power play, while RIT converted 2-of-7 attempts.
  • The RIT penalty kill entered the night ranked 14th nationally (87.2), killing 34 of 39 man-down opportunities this season.  
  • RIT hadn't allowed four power play goals in a game since visiting Robert Morris went 4-for-6 in a 6-5 victory on Oct. 8, 2016.
  • RIT junior goaltender Kolby Matthews finished with 20 saves, while RIT out-shot Canisius, 26-25.
