Baseball splits double header against Keystone College at RussMatt Central Florida Invitational

Box Score ORLANDO, FL – The Rochester Institute of Technology baseball team split its double header against Keystone College, Sunday, as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational during their annual Spring trip to Florida. The Tigers lost the first game of the day, 4-1, but they sprung to life in the second. RIT beat Keystone 15-5 after scoring 10 runs in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) had a strong day at the plate as went 6 for 8 with 3 doubles and 3 scored runs in total between the two games. 2 of his doubles occurred in the same inning. Senior Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) hit a grand slam in during the 10 run seventh inning of the day's second game. Sophomore Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) also homered during that inning. He finished the second game 2 for 4 at the plate with a home run, a double, 2 RBI, and 3 scored runs.
 
GAME 1
How it Happened:
  • RIT was first to score on the day. Senior second baseman Navada Waterman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) hit a double in the second inning to drive in fellow senior Kyle Terzini (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who was hit by a pitch in the inning's first at bat and later stole second to get into scoring position.
  • Keystone responded with a home run by junior outfielder Adam Kelly in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1 run apiece.
  • Keystone pushed ahead in the eighth by scoring 3 runs to bring the game to it's final score of: Keystone 4, RIT 1. Junior outfielder Chris Ammirati doubled to drive in all 3 runs after the Tigers walked the bases loaded.
 At the Plate:
  • Waterman went 1 for 2 with a double and RIT's lone RBI.
  • Sophomore Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) went 2 for 3 with both hits being singles.
GAME 2
How it Happened:
  • Keystone was first on the board as they scored a run in the first inning. The Giants saw their runners advance due to walks and fielding errors.
  • The Tigers responded with a run of their own in the second. Sophomore Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) doubled to drive in fellow sophomore Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood), who also doubled in the inning's first at bat to get on base.
  • Keystone also scored in the second on a single by senior infielder Nick Carlini that drove in senior outfielder Jared Davis who walked to get on base. The game entered the third inning with Keystone in the lead, 2-1.
  • Neither team scored in the third before RIT took the lead in the fourth. Blackall would score on a wild pitch after hitting a double to begin the inning for the Tigers. Junior Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) singled later in the inning to drive in Terzini and Libby who singled and walked, respectively, to get on base. 
  • The Tigers scored again in the fifth inning. Terzini singled to drive in senior Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) who also singled at the start of the inning. 
  • Keystone responded with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Davis hit a two run home run to bring the game to a score of 5-4 with RIT in the lead.
  • The Giants held the Tigers scoreless in the sixth and then scored again to even the score at 5 runs apiece. Carlini scored due to an error in the field.
  • RIT came alive with a huge 10 run inning in the 7th to secure the win. Blackall began the inning with a double and would immediately be driven in on a home run by Reilly. McNamara then singled to drive in Terzini who walked to get on base. Capra doubled to drive in 2 runs, including McNamara, with the bases loaded. Waterman scored on a wild pitch after walking to get on base. Blackall hit his second double of the inning, Reilly was hit by a pitch, and then Terzini capped off RIT's huge run with a grand slam.
  • The Tigers held Keystone scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to bring the game to its final score of 15-5. 
 At the Plate:
  • Terzini went 3 for 4 with a grand slam, 5 RBI, and 3 scored runs.
  • Reilly went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, 2 RBI, and 3 scored runs.
  • Blackall went 4 for 5 with 3 doubles and 3 scored runs.
  • Capra went 2 for 5 with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 scored runs.
  • McNamara went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and a scored run.
  • Libby went 1 for 3 with a double, and RBI, and 2 scored runs.
The Tigers will play 4 more games this week as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Orlando. They will next play Beloit College on Monday, Mar. 9th, at 5 pm.
