BOSTON, MA – Junior
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and sophomore
Max Gloskey (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) of the RIT men's track and field team competed at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship from the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday, March 8.
Smith recorded a tenth place finish in the pole vault for the Tigers, clearing 4.75 meters, just shy of his personal best. Smith began the day by clearing 4.45 meters on his first attempt. He then cleared 4.60 meters in the next round on his final attempt, and on his first chance of the third round, went over the 4.75 meter barrier. He was one of 11 student-athletes to surpass that height. The bar was set at would have been a personal best of 4.85 meters in the next round, but Smith was unable to clear, just missing out on All-American honors.
Smith, who recorded a personal-best vault of 4.76 meters at the RIT Late February Invitational on Feb. 16, was attempting to become RIT's second straight All-American in the indoor pole vault, as
Ethan Maguire (Penfield, NY/Penfield) placed eighth in the event last year.
Luke Winder of North Central College was the event winner, clearing 5.30 meters.
Gloskey finished fifth in his heat and recorded the 12th fastest time in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, hitting the finish line in a speedy time of 8.32 seconds. The top eight finishers advanced to Saturday's final, which will take place at 1:55 p.m. It was Gloskey's first trip to the NCAA Championship. Earlier this season, Gloskey set a school record of 8.21 seconds to win the Liberty League Championship and qualify for nationals.
