Women's hockey to play home-and-home with CHA rival Syracuse this weekend

ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT women's hockey team will compete in a home-and-home series with College Hockey America rival Syracuse this weekend. The Tigers and Orange will face off at 2:05 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Gene Polisseni Center, before heading east for game two, at the Tennity Ice Pavilion in Syracuse at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.
 
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for RIT staff, faculty and alumni, $3 for youth, and as always, admission is free for all RIT students (one ticket per valid ID). Tickets are available at the Gene Polisseni Center and Gordon Field House Box Offices, by calling (585) 475-4121 or by visiting www.rithockey.com.
 
RIT (6-22-2, 4-10-2 CHA) has four regular season games left, with three on home ice. The Tigers are currently fifth in the College Hockey America standings with 10 points. RIT can finish as high as third or as low as sixth. Syracuse is currently second with 22 points, can finish as high as first or as low as fourth. The CHA Tournament takes place from March 2-4 at HARBORCENTER in Buffalo.
 
The Tigers dropped a pair of games to College Hockey America leader, nationally-ranked Robert Morris last weekend, falling by scores of 4-1 and 5-2. Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored RIT's lone goal 1:02 into Friday's game, while Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made 34 saves. Saturday, Cornine scored both RIT goals, while Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) had two assists in a 5-2 loss. Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made 21 saves on 22 shots in relief.
 
Cornine has continued to be RIT's leading scorer, scoring all three goals for the Tigers last weekend at Robert Morris, giving her 11 on the season. She has 12 points (8-4-12) over her last 11 games and 16 points (9-7-16) over the last 16 contests.
 
Syracuse (11-12-5, 10-4-2 CHA) enters the weekend after a split at home against Mercyhurst, winning 3-0 on Friday, while falling 3-2 on Saturday. Stephanie Grossi leads the team in scoring with 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists. Jessica Sibley leads Syracuse with 14 assists. Six different Orange skaters have at least 15 points. In net, Abbey Miller has played in 25 games with a 10-10-5 record, 1.76 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
 
Syracuse leads the all-time series between the two schools, 11-7-2. Thirteen of the 20 meetings have either ended in ties or a one-goal difference, with seven going to overtime. The two teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 2 and Syracuse earned a 3-0 win on Dec. 3. Cornine scored both RIT goals in the 2-2 tie on Dec. 2, while de Jonge made 32 saves.
 
Friday's game from the Gene Polisseni Center will have video and live stats, as well as a radio broadcast online and on WITR 89.7 FM. Saturday's game in Syracuse will also have video and live stats. The Tigers will return home for two games in their final weekend of regular season play next weekend against Mercyhurst. The Tigers and Lakers will battle at 6:05 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 and 2:05 p.m. the following day. RIT will honor its class of 2017 before next Saturday's game.
