ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 3 seed RIT (12-3-3) women's soccer team will head to Geneva, N.Y. to play No. 2 seed Vassar College (9-5-3) in the Liberty League Tournament semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Boswell Field on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The winner advances to Sunday's championship game to face the winner between No. 1 William Smith (15-1-0) and No. 4 St. Lawrence (11-6-0) at 3:30 p.m.
RIT advanced to Saturday's semifinals after a dramatic 1-0 win over Clarkson University in Tuesday's quarterfinal. Junior
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) scored the game-winner in the 90th minute on an assist from
Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY/Home Schooled) from Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers enter Saturday fifth in the Liberty League in scoring, averaging 1.33 goals per game. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 24-9 on the season and sit second defensively in the league allowing just 0.50 goals per contest. RIT enters Saturday 6-0-2 over its last eight games, outscoring its opponents 11-3 during that stretch.
Emily Thiel (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) leads the team in scoring with 13 points. She leads the league with nine assists, and is one assist shy of tying RIT's single-season record of 10.
Riley Yankowich (Deerfield Beach, FL/Germantown Academy) is second on the team in scoring with 10 points on five goals, while
Mia White (Littleton, CO/Rocky Mountain Deaf School) is third in scoring with nine points and four goals.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) is 12-3-3 in net for RIT. She is second in the league with a 0.48 goals against average and fourth with an .845 save percentage.
Vassar enters Saturday as the No. 2 seed. The Brewers lost 2-1 at Ithaca in the regular season finale on Oct. 28. Ashley Ferry scored the Brewers lone goal. Vassar comes into Saturday 5-3-1 in its last nine games.
The Brewers are third in the Liberty League in scoring (2.0 goals per game) and third defensively (1.0 goals allowed per game). Vassar has outscored its opponents 34-17 on the season.
Ferry leads the team and is third in the Liberty League in scoring with 22 points. She is third in the league averaging 1.29 points per game and third with eight goals. Amanda McFarland is second on the team in scoring and tied for ninth in the league with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Savannah Cutler is third with 11 points and five goals. Fiona Walsh is 9-5-3 in net this season for Vassar with six clean sheets. She is fourth in the league with 0.97 goals against average, and third with a .851 save percentage.
Vassar is 4-3-2 all time versus RIT. These two teams played to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 23 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Ferry gave the Brewers a lead on her goal in the 58th minute.
Sami Alur (Fremont, CA/Irvington) equalized for RIT on her goal in the 87th minute to earn the point for RIT. The Tigers last win over Vassar came in 2011.
