ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY — The RIT (10-5, 4-2 Liberty League) women's volleyball team split Friday's Liberty League matches, played at Bard College. The Tigers lost the opening match 3-0 against Vassar (9-6, 5-1 Liberty League), before coming back with a similar 3-0 victory over Skidmore (8-6, 1-1 League League) Friday night.

In the opening match against Vassar, RIT lost the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-12, but attempted to kick-start a comeback in the third set — but just fell short, dropping the final set, 27-25.

"I think Vassar did great job preparing for this match. Their excitement level and purpose of play were tremendous the first two sets," said head coach Jim Lodes. "I felt we battled much better in set three and will need to be at that level or better as this weekend progresses."

Vassar's Jane McLeod had a match-high 14 kills, while Devan Gallagher (nine kills) and Annie MacMillan (match-high 31 assists) paced the Brewers attack.

For RIT, senior Sarah Szybist (Colorado Springs, CO/Ramstein) had 11 kills, but hit just .029 with eight digs, while sophomore Erin Parkinson (Carrollton, TX/W.T. White) finished with 20 assists. Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) added four blocks and three service aces, while freshman Joelle Marston (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) added five kills.

In the second match, the Tigers came back with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) against Skidmore. Szybist led the way with a double-double, finishing with 20 kills, hitting .376 to go along with 13 digs. Parkinson put together another solid match, leading the floor with 37 assists, along with six digs and two blocks. Valentine and Marston both had nine kills in the win. Rebecca Bennett (Springfield, PA/Springfield) led the Tigers with 19 digs, as RIT had 51 total in the match to just 36 for Skidmore. In addition, RIT hit .276 as a match.

For Skidmore, Katy Ehnstrom had seven kills and Catie Canfield added six. Lauren Wolters (14) and Bailey Hutchens (12) led the assist category for the Thoroughbreds, while Allie Dillon and Marcella Familiar-Bolanos recorded 14 digs each.

"I felt we generally played better against a feisty Skidmore team," said Lodes. "We will need to continue to execute during Liberty League matches. I look forward to tomorrow."

RIT is back in action tomorrow at Vassar College, where the Tigers take on Bard at 12 p.m. and Union at 2 p.m.
