ROCHESTER, NY — The RIT women's volleyball team will host the first 2016 Liberty League Crossover weekend tournament on Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17 from Clark Gym. Competing on the opening league weekend is RIT, Bard, Clarkson, St. Lawrence and Vassar. Union and Skidmore are off this weekend.
The Tigers (6-3) are coming off a 2-2 split in the Marcia French Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio last weekend. Senior outside hitter Sarah Szybist (Colorado Springs, CO/Ramstein) was named the Liberty League Volleyball Performer of the Week for the second-consecutive week on Tuesday, after becoming RIT's all-time school record holder in career kills (1,998). Szybist currently leads all of the Division III with 5.39 kills and 6.37 points per set in nine matches this season.
Clarkson (5-3) went 3-1 last weekend at the New Paltz Hawks Invitational. The Golden Knights have not lost a Liberty League contest since Oct. 2012, as they have won 44 straight conference matchups, including the last four regular season and postseason tournaments.
St. Lawrence (4-5) has come back to win its last four matches after five straight losses to start the season. The Saints have won 12 of 13 sets during that four-match winning streak. Freshman Amanda Teppo is leading the conference so far this season in blocks, with .92 per set.
Vassar (4-5) has had almost an identical 2016 campaign as St. Lawrence thus far. The Brewers lost their first five matches, before coming back with four-straight sweeps. Sophomore Annie MacMillan sits atop the conference with 9.91 assists per set, while freshman Jane McLeod is third in the league with 3.53 kills per set, along with a .261 hitting percentage (fifth in the conference).
Bard (2-6) is the only Liberty League team coming off a mid-week matchup. The Raptors lost a five-set contest at Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Wednesday. Sophomore Sofia Koukia is fourth in the conference with 3.48 kills per set, while classmate Victoria Chou is the Liberty League leader in aces per set, with 0.67.
