ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's tennis team (1-1) won its first match of the 2015-16 season, defeating Elmira (4-4) 9-0 in a non-conference matchup at the Gordon Field House on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers swept the three doubles matches to get out to the early lead. The team of
Chandler Daub (Kailua-Kona, HI/Kealakehe) and
Ben Lynaugh (Fairport, NY/Fairport) shut out Elmira's Satchal Waters and Patrick Tracey, 8-0 at first doubles. At second doubles,
Ken Chou (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott ) and
Jared Ingoglia (Essex Fells, NJ/West Essex Regional) won 8-3 over Austin Mansell and Chris Konow, and Jared Raphel and
Jason Alexander (Austin, TX/Bowie) finished the sweep with the 8-1 win at third doubles.
RIT continued its strong play into singles action, never conceding a set. Daub picked up his first singles victory of the season, besting Yu Ikeda in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Lynaugh cruised at second singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Mansell. At fourth singles,
Ken Chou (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott ) picked up the first 11 games in the match, before Tracey rallied, picking up four straight games. With the score at 5-4 in the second set, Chou buckled down and finished off the match, winning 6-0, 6-4.
Patrick Matthews picked up his first victory of his collegiate career, besting Yaniv Kogan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 in sixth singles. In the final match, Dansereau finished the sweep, beating Konow 6-4, 6-2.
"The guys just realized that they had talent, and they concentrated, stayed in the moment and played each point," said RIT men's tennis head coach
Zach Remis, who picked up his first men's victory at RIT. "I'm happy with the way they prepared for this match."
The Tigers will take on Division II Roberts Wesleyan next Tuesday, March 15 at 4 p.m. in the Gordon Field House.
