ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team celebrates Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 15 as University of Connecticut comes to Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:05 p.m.
Tickets still remain for Saturday's game. Fans can purchase tickets at the Gene Polisseni Center or Blue Cross Arena box offices or also online at
www.rithockey.com. RIT has sold out six consecutive Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend games at Blue Cross Arena dating back to 2010. The first 7,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Brick City weekend t-shirt.
The Tigers are 10-9-2 all-time at the downtown arena, riding a current five-game unbeaten streak. RIT won the 2015 and 2016 Atlantic Hockey Championships, sandwiched around a 2-2 tie in last year's homecoming game against Bowling Green.
RIT (1-1-0) opened the 2016-17 season by splitting a pair of wild games at the Gene Polisseni Center versus Robert Morris in a rematch of the 2016 Atlantic Hockey Championship last weekend. On Friday, RIT skated to a 6-3 win before Robert Morris rallied to win Saturday, 6-5. The Tigers out-shot Robert Morris, 95-52 over the weekend.
Liam Kerins (Caledon, Ontario/North York Rangers), and
Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) had four points apiece, while
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals),
Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers), and
Matt Abt (Leduc, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines ) added three points each. In total, 14 different players had at least one point. First-year players
Adam Brubacher (Elmira, Ontario/Powell River Kings),
Jordan Peacock (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Cougars), and
Brody Valette (High River, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines) scored their first collegiate goals. RIT is receiving votes in the current USCHO.com national poll.
Connecticut, (2-0-0) who is also receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll, opened the 2016-17 season in tremendous fashion last weekend, with a pair of shutout wins over Alabama-Huntsville, 6-0 and 4-0. Sophomore Tage Thompson, a 2016 first round pick of the St. Louis Blues, tallied three goals and two assists in the weekend sweep. Evan Richardson also scored three goals, while Karl El-Mir and Maxim Letunov had three points apiece. In goal, Rob Nichols, the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, stopped all 44 shots he faced in the two shutout victories. Connecticut has six NHL draft picks on its 2016-17 roster.
The Huskies are in action Friday night at Colgate University before heading to Blue Cross Arena.
RIT and Connecticut were Atlantic Hockey rivals from 2006-2014 before the Huskies moved to Hockey East. RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 19-10-1.
Saturday's game will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports channel 26 with Gene Battaglia and John DiTullio bringing you the action from Blue Cross Arena. In addition, the game will be broadcast over the airwaves on WITR 89.7 FM and
