ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (7-3, 1-0 Liberty League) scored four times in an explosive fourth inning to roll to a 6-1 victory over St. Lawrence University (8-2, 4-1 Liberty League) to open up Liberty League play, on the campus of University of Rochester Sunday night.
Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) blasted a shot over the left field fence to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Devin Robson answered back with a homer for the Saints to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
The Tigers exploded in the bottom half of the inning to score four runs and take control. Senior
Chris Barr (North Wales, PA/North Penn ) singled to start RIT's run with one out.
Brett Kajganich (North Royalton, OH/Holy Name) singled to advance Barr to third.
Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) drove in Barr with a double and advanced Kajganich to third.
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and Gorman both singled, driving in one run apiece. A wild pitch allowed Bolorin and Gorman to advance to second and third.
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) blasted a shot to center field to score the final run of the inning.
RIT was able to score its sixth run moving the runners around in the sixth inning.
Barr was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Gorman and
Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) were both 2-for-4. Gorman recorded two RBI's while Hogan, Bolorin, and Flanagan each added one.
Three RIT pitchers combined on a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) started, picking up his second win of the season, going five innings.
Brian Sheridan (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) pitched the sixth, recording two strikeouts.
Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) picked up the save with no hits and six strikeouts over the final three innings.
"It's a great way to start conference play," said RIT head coach
Rob Grow. "We played well both offensively and defensively. Our pitching looked great and now we just need to perform at this level every game. Every conference game is important and picking up this win early is big."
RIT is back in action tomorrow for a double-header against St. Lawrence at the University of Rochester campus with the first game getting underway at 12 p.m.
