SCHENECTADY, NY– The RIT  baseball team's (16-14, 11-9 Liberty League) quest for the postseason got a little bit tougher, as the Tigers were swept by Liberty League foe Union (21-8-1, 14-5-1 Liberty League) in a doubleheader by 5-2 and 11-3 scores on a cloudy Saturday afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader was the shortened seven innings while game two was the standard nine.

Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) led RIT on the day, going 3-for-6 with a double and scored two runs. Chris Barr (North Wales, PA/North Penn ), Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and Mike Myers (Hamilin, NY/Brockport) each had RBI's on the day.

For Union, David Peretti had himself a terrifc day, going 5-for-7 and driving in four total RBI's, while his teammate Kent Curran finished 3-for-8 with three RBIs. Five Dutchmen finished with at least two RBI's while two others had one of their own.

A very competetive game one went to Union's standout freshman pitcher Jake Fishman who went all seven innings allowing just six hits, one earned run and stuck out six. RIT starter Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) took the loss, throwing a six solid innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out two. Three errors unfortunately didn't help Cohall's cause as it led to three unearned runs scoring in the Dutchmen's 5-2 win.

In game two, Dane O'Neil earned the win for Union eating up eight innings and allowing just four hits, two earned runs while striking out four. Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took the loss for RIT, lasting just four innings in the loss.

Game one was a pitchers duel through the first three innings as both Fishman and Cohall kept the game scoreless. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Union cracked the scoreboard as Cohall's wild pitch struck out Curran but allowed him to reach first and brought Caruso to score from third. To make matters worse, a throwing error on the play allowed a second run to score.

Down 3-0 in the fifth, RIT would storm back, scoring on a ground ball fielders choice by Barr and a throwing error as Barr attempted to steal second a few pitches later. Union answered in the bottom of the inning though scoring two runs off of Pertetti's single to left field to regain a three run lead, 5-2, a score that would stand through the reamainder of the game.

The second game got off to a rough start for the Tigers who surrendered four runs in the first inning. Little and the defense would stop the bleeding over the next two innings allowing RIT to get back into the game. In the top of the third Myers drove in a run on his single to the right side, to cut into the Dutchmen's lead. One inning later RIT would add another run after a throwing error allowed Canestro to score from third, making it just a two run game 4-2.

Union would explode for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning though to jump out to a 9-2 lead, and never let the Tigers back in the game.

The Tigers will remain in Schenectady to wrap up the Liberty League portion of the 2014 season tomorrow, with one last doubleheader against Union. The games will get underway at 12 p.m., as RIT's postseason fate weighs in the balance.
