Cohall's shutout leads baseball to doubleheader split against Liberty League foe St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY - Sophomore hurler Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) fired his second career shutout, lifting RIT baseball (14-8, 9-4 Liberty League) to a doubleheader split at host St. Lawrence University (12-9, 8-5 Liberty League) from Fay Field on Friday afternoon. RIT won game one, 4-0, while the Saints took the nightcap, 11-1.

In game one, Cohall was the story, scattering just five hits without at walk, while striking out three batters for his third win of the season. Cohall has been sensational for the Tigers this season, with a 1.97 earned run average over 32 innings, with 27 strikeouts and just five walks. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 21 innings pitched, with three straight complete games. Cohall has allowed just one earned run over his last 27 1/3 innings pitched.

RIT managed 12 hits off Saints ace Joe Riley and used a three-run third inning to set up the win. Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) hit a one-out double and scored on Chris Barr (North Wales, PA/North Penn )'s single. Walt Roman (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) then singles with Barr going to third and Barr scored on the throw when Roman stole second. A single by Skip Flanagan (Framingham, MA/Bishop Feehan) moved Roman to third and Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) singled to drive in Roman.

The Tigers added a run in the top of the seventh when Roman singled and Phil Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) doubled down the left field line. Roman was 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base, while Sammon was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's. Barr was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Bryan Palmero had two of the five Saints hits including a double while Riley slipped to 4-2 on the season, walking two and striking out four in the seven-inning complete game.

In game two, St. Lawrence's Kevin Prindle held RIT to one run through seven innings and the Saints scored 10 runs in the first four innings en route a 11-1 win.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two as Mark Syron hit a two-run homer and Brian Magovney added a run-scoring ground out. They added two more without a hit in the bottom of the second on sacrifice flies by Syron and Devin Robson.

Zane Fish singled, stole second, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Mic Regan's ground out in the bottom of the third. Syron singled, stole second and scored on Robson's double in the fourth and after Khifer O'Connor drew a walk, Fish singled in two more runs for a 9-0 lead. Fish then stole second and Chris Fernandez delivered a two-out single to drive him in for the 10th run of the game.

CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored RIT's lone run in the top of the fifth as he singled, went to second on an error and scored on Taylor Hogan (Rochester, NY/Brighton)'s single. Seven different Tigers had hits in game two. Ethan Humbert (Rose, NY/North Rose-Wolcott) took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs, including three earned in 1 1/3 innings. Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) pitched five innings of relief, while Rich Sammon (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and Tom Dillon (Oswego, NY/Oswego) finished the game out for RIT.

Prindle allowed an unearned run on five hits, walked two and struck out five with Frank Grady pitching the last two innings and allowing two hits.

Both teams remain in the thick of the Liberty League playoff race with the split. RIT is second in the league standings, while St. Lawrence is fourth. St. Lawrence leads the all-time series between the two schools, 42-29.

The Tigers and Saints wrap up their regular season series on Saturday from Fay Field at 12 p.m.
