Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) became RIT's all-time leader in digs, as the volleyball team (19-14, 7-5 Liberty League) wrapped up Liberty League play with a four-set win over Skidmore (7-23, 3-9 Liberty League) and a five-set loss to Union (22-10, 7-5 Liberty League) on Saturday afternoon from Skidmore College. RIT finished tied for third in the league standings.
Davis broke the previous record of 2,052 digs, held by Krissy Caton, who played at RIT from 1995-98. Davis broke the record in the fourth set of the win over Skidmore. She now has 2,075 career digs.
In the opener, RIT defeated Skidmore, 25-23, 25-11, 23-25, 25-23.
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) led the Tigers with a season-high 29 kills, hitting .358 to go along with seven digs and a pair of service aces.
Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) dished out a career-high 52 assists to go along with nine digs, while
Laiz Novaes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Centro Educational) added 11 digs, seven kills, and six assists.
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) slammed eight kills, while
Taylor Harkness (Batavia, NY/Batavia) hit .375. Defensively, Davis recorded 22 assists.
Brittany Osborn led Skidmore with 12 kills, while Kalle Fox added 25 assists and Marcela Familiar recorded 20 digs.
I'm really pleased we had a bounce back match to start today," said RIT head coach
Jim Lodes. "We overcame a slower start and a slow beginning to set three."
In the finale against Union, RIT won the first set, 25-22, before falling set two 30-28. RIT took set three, 25-20, before Union came back to win the fourth set, 25-17, and set five, 15-8.
Szybist led the way with 24 kills, while hitting .447 to go along with 13 digs. Novaes had a triple-double with 16 assists, 14 kills, and 14 digs, while
Amy Van Hienen (Castor, Alberta/Gus Wetter) added 12 kills and eight digs. Davis had 19 digs, while
Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) recorded a team-best five blocks.
"I felt we did some good things this weekend," said Lodes. "The consistency of that style of play and effort to execute at that level is what needs to be our next step as a team. I look forward to this week of practice and next weekends matches to prepare us to compete for our league championship."
Last night, RIT fell to Clarkson and St. Lawrence, both in three sets.
RIT concludes the regular season next weekend at the New York State Regional Challenge hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. On Friday, RIT plays Elmira at 4 p.m. and Montclair State University at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Tigers play Rowan at 10 a.m. and New York University at 2 p.m.
