ROCHESTER, NY – With only four first place finishes on the day, the RIT men's swimming and diving team (3-3) fell to the Fredonia Blue Devils (4-1), 174-126 on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Judson Pool. Those four wins came in both the one and three-meter diving events as well as the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle.
Justin Morris (Marlborough, MA/Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School) earned the first win of the day for RIT in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in at 2:00.49. Morris added to his solid day with a third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, a second place finish in the 200-yard IM and was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay, which earned second place as well.
Ryan Moore (Herndon, VA/Oakton),
Matt Butler (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) and
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area) were Morris' teammates on that relay, which came in at 1:30.49. Fredonia won that event with a time of 1:28.08.
Another first place finisher for the Tigers was Alexander Popescu, who won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.12.
John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) continued his strong season for RIT sweeping both the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 274.10 and 283.60 respectively. Those were the only other first place finishes for the Tigers on the day.
RIT swam very strongly throughout the day but got edged out by the Devils a number of times, who went on to claim the 174-126 win.
RIT has dropped two straight, heading into one of the most important meets of the year, the Liberty League Championships, which will be held at Union college on Dec. 6-7. Last season RIT finished fourth overall out of nine teams in that meet, as Rochester wound up as the 2012 champions.
