ROCHESTER, NY -- Goals by
Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) and
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) helped the RIT men's soccer team (8-6-3) to a 2-0 win over Ithaca College (4-11-0) in non-conference action from a sun-drenched Tiger Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers, winners of three straight games overall, have now won three straight over Ithaca dating back to 2011.
Shots were 12-7 in favor of RIT, while the Tigers took nine corner kicks to three for the Bombers.
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) picked up his seventh shut out and ninth overall victory in net for RIT, making two saves. Jordan Gentile took the loss for Ithaca, stopping five shots.
RIT took a 1-0 lead early on with a goal in the sixth minute of the contest. With the ball loose in the Ithaca box, Bloshkin poked a pass over to Sullivan who scored into the far left corner for his second tally of the season and gave the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish.
Scott Halpern provided Ithaca its first shot in the 25th minute, but his blast sailed wide of the RIT net.
Ithaca had two great chances in the second half to tie the game. The first chance came with a little under 24 minutes to play when Halpern got loose in the TIgers box and fired a shot that looked to be headed for the left corner, but Reeves sprawled and made the great diving save to keep the Bombers scoreless.
Ithaca had another great chance with 12:45 to play when Bobby Buttrick's header off a corner kick from Max Bjork was tipped over the cross bar by Reeves at the last second.
Bloshkin put the game away in the 86th minute when he scored off a corner kick. He hit an in-swinging service with his left foot that deflected off the head of an Ithaca defender and through the hands of Gentile into the net for a 2-0 RIT lead. It was Bloshkin's fourth goal of the season.
The Tigers wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 2 when they face Liberty League rival Hobart College at 2 p.m. in Geneva N.Y. RIT needs to win to have a chance at making the Liberty League Tournament.
