ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (11-10-3, 4-3-3 CHA) skated to a 2-2 draw with conference foe Robert Morris (10-8-3, 6-4-1 CHA) at Ritter Arena on Saturday evening. The two teams remain locked in heated battle for third place in the conference standings, as Robert Morris holds a slim one-point lead over the Tigers.
#
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and
Ariane Yokoyama (Van Nuys, CA/LA Selects)# scored RIT's goals while Kristen Richards and Katelyn Scott scored for Robert Morris.
#
Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)# made 22 saves in net for the Tigers and Kristen DiCiocco made 32 stops for thre Colonials.
The Colonials converted twice on the power play, in three chances, while RIT went 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.
The first period was evenly played, with each team firing eight shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. However, Robert Morris was able to convert on a power play score at the 16:19 mark. Richards scored on a rebound in front of the net. Binnington stopped the initial shot from the point, but the rebound trickled right to Roberts who stuffed it into the open net for the lead.
The scoring picked up in the second period. RIT converted at the 12:53 mark on a goal from Yokoyama who took a pass from #
Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) and
Melissa Bromley (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers)# to knot the score at 1. The goal was her sixth of the season.
Just under four minutes later, the Tigers took the lead when Payerl jammed home her own rebound to give RIT a brief 2-1 lead with a power play goal. #
Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets)# was credited with the assist.
With only 50 seconds left in the period, Robert Morris converted on their own power play opportunity when Scott fired a shot that Binnington got a piece of but it trickled through her pads and across the goal line.
#
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)# had a chance to give the Tigers the lead at the end of the second period, but DiCiocco just got a piece of Paton's shot and then it clanged off the post.
Neither team would score the rest of the way. The game got physical toward the end of the third period when the Colonials' Richards was given a five-minute checking from behind penalty and a game misconduct with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. However, Bromley was whistled for a double minor so the Tigers didn't have a power play chance until 50 seconds remained in the contest and were unable to convert.
The game would go to overtime and despite putting seven shots on net, to only one from Robert Morris, the game would end in a tie.
The two teams conclude their regular season series with a 2:05 p.m. contest tomorrow at Ritter Arena. RIT swept the first two games of the season at Robert Morris by identical 2-1 scores. RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools 3-2-1. The two teams met three teams between 2007 and 2008.
