ELMIRA, NY - RIT (3-3) earned a split in opening day action action at the 2012 Elmira Invitational on Friday at Speidel Gymnasium. RIT defeated Wells (1-4) in three sets to open play, 25-12, 25-20, 25-22, then lost to host Elmira (3-0) in four sets, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20.
In the match against Wells,
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) led the Tigers with six kills, while
Cat Sullivan (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman) hit 1.000 with three kills in just one set played.
Suzanne Jokajtys (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) set a career-high with seven service aces, while
Katie Cooper (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) added six digs, five aces and four assists. The duo of
Taylor Harkness (Batavia, NY/Batavia) and
Christina Worth (Valencia, CA/Valencia) combined for 17 assists.
Brianna Neuberger recorded a season-best nine digs.
Carly Schriever (Dayton, OH/Tri-County North), who missed all of last season due to injury, made her collegiate debut, with two digs, a block, and a kill.
Overall, RIT had 15 aces in the match. They hit .389 in the first set.
Against Elmira, RIT lost the first two sets before rallying to win set three. The Tigers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth before Elmira went on a 17-5 run to take a 20-12 lead. RIT responded with six of the next seven points before Elmira pulled away to secure the win.
Six Tigers had at least six kills against Elmira. Martin and Cooper each recorded nine kills. Cooper added 13 digs, nine assists, and a team-best three service aces, while Martin had nine digs.
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) hit .368 with eight kills and two blocks.
Worth recorded 33 assists, eight kills, six digs, and four blocks from her setter position. Sullivan chipped in with six kills and four blocks, while Jokajtys added nine digs and eight blocks.
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) led the way with 18 digs.
RIT concludes action at the Elmira Invitational on Saturday, as they face Hartwick at 10 a.m. and Houghton at 2 p.m.
