Women's hockey suffers tough road loss at No. 8 North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, ND – The RIT women's hockey team (6-7-2) dropped its third straight contest, falling 8-2 to No. 8 North Dakota (11-5-0) in front of 1,070 fans at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Saturday evening. North Dakota scored four times in both the first and third periods, and added four power-play tallies, which proved to be the difference.

North Dakota dominated play all evening, out-shooting RIT, 58-15. The 58 shots are the most allowed by RIT in a game at the Division I level . The eight goals allowed by RIT is a season-high and most overall since allowing eight against Princeton on Feb. 18, 1995.

Josefine Jakobsen scored a pair of first period power-play goals and added an assist to pace North Dakota, who has now won seven straight games. Michelle Karvine had a goal and four assists, while Jocelyne Lamoureux had two goals and assists, and Monique Lamoureux tallied a goal and three assists. Meghan Dufault and Shannon Kaiser also scored. In net, Shelby Amsley-Benzie stopped 13 shots to improve to 5-3 in 2012-13.

#Ariane Yokoyama (Van Nuys, CA/LA Selects) and Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# scored for the Tigers. Schlattman is now one point away from becoming the ninth player at RIT to record 100 for her career.

In net, Ali Binnngton started for the Tigers, and faced a barrage of shots, 26, in just one period. Binnington was sensational at times, but allowed four goals, all from point-blank range. #Laura Chamberlain (Norco, CA/LA Selects)# replaced Binnington to start the second period and made 28 saves on 32 shots over the final 40 minutes, as North Dakota had several tremendous scoring chances all evening.

North Dakota scored four power-play goals in eight chances, firing 23 shots on goal over that span. The four-power-play goals are the most allowed by the Tigers in a single-game in program history.

Head Coach Scott McDonald was not happy with how his team played tonight.

"We struggled on both ends all game and were a step behind (North Dakota) all night," said McDonald. "It's tough to say that your goaltending was good when you give up eight goals in a game, but if not for both of them, the score could have been much worse. Both goalies played very well for us tonight."

The Tigers struggled mightily in the first period, struggling to stay out of the penalty box, while giving up a Division I team record 26 shots to trail 4-1.

Jakobsen got her first goal of the game just 2:54 in on the power-play, as Binnington made the initial save on a shot by Monique Lamoureux, but the rebound came right to Jakobsen, who kicked the puck to her stick and fired the puck into the empty goal.

Just 50 seconds later, Yokoyama tallied her third goal of the season, as she took a perfect feed from #Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres)# in front and put the shot past Amsley-Benzie. Scoyne made a tremendous individual play, intercepting a pass at her own blue-line, skating around a few North Dakota players in the neutral zone, darting in on the right wing, firing a perfec t feed to Yokoyama, who was darting towards the goal.

Binnington made a handful of excellent saves over the next 10 minutes, but finally, on the 22nd shot of the period, Jocelyne Lamoureux fired a rocket of a slap-shot from the left face-off circle over the RIT goaltender's glove to make it 2-1.

RIT nearly tied it moments later, shorthanded, as Yokoyama found #Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy)#, who was robbed in front by Amsley-Benzie.

At the end of that North Dakota power-play, 17:39 into the period, Jakobsen tallied her second power-play goal of the period , tipping a perfect cross-ice feed from Monique Lamoureux past Binnington for the goal.

Just 1:04 later, North Dakota upped its lead to 4-1, as Dufault fired a shot over the glove of Binnington from the slot on a 3-on-2 rush.

The 26 shots were the most allowed in a period by RIT since moving to the NCAA level in 2001. Previously, RIT allowed 23 shots in the second period against Manhattanville on Feb. 7, 2004. It was the first time RIT allowed 20 shots in a period since Nov. 15, 2008 vs. Elmira.

RIT had a full five-minute major power-play in the second period, but could only muster one shot. The best chance of the period came off a shot from #Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic)#, as she came out of the corner, but was denied by the goaltender.

North Dakota out-shot RIT, 12-3 in the period, but Chamberlain, who was so good last night, continued her excellent play. Chamberlain robbed Karvinen with a diving arm save late in the period to keep the score 4-1.

Just 1:44 into the final period, Schlattman stole a pass at her own blue-line and raced in all alone. The senior captain roofed a shot over the shoulder of Amsley-Benzie for her team best eight tally of the year to give RIT a chance, down just 4-2.

North Dakota answered 1:01 later, as Karvinen stuffed home a rebound in tight after Chamberlain made a great save on the initial shot to make it 5-2.

North Dakota pulled away over the last 10 minutes, as the Lamoureux sisters traded goals and Kaiser tallied her first collegiate goal in the final minute.

This weekend's games marked the first meetings between the two schools. Last night, Monique Lamoureux scored her second goal of the game early in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and lift North Dakota to a 3-2 win over the Tigers. RIT had a golden chance to tie the game in the final minute, but a deflection by #Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury)# went off the left post and out. Schlattman tallied a goal and an assist, while #Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# also scored. Chamberlain made 25 saves for RIT, many of the highlight reel variety.

North Dakota went 22-12-3 and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2011-12. Both Lamoureux sisters won a Silver medal with the United States Olympic Women's Hockey Team in 2010.

The Tigers are now 0-4-0 this season against ranked teams.

RIT returns to action next Saturday and Sunday with a pair of games at Ohio State University. Saturday's game starts at 7 p.m., while Sunday's gets underway at 2 p.m.
