Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Jeremy Zalacca - Assistant SID

RIT women's hockey drops fourth straight, falling 3-1 at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OH - The RIT women's hockey team (6-8-2) fell 3-1 to Ohio State (13-5-1) in a non-conference matchup. The Buckeyes led RIT in shots by a narrow 32-26 margin and three different Buckeyes scored goals in the contest. The loss is RIT's fourth straight.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first period. RIT found themselves on the power-play on three separate occasions, but Ohio State goalie Chelsea Knapp kept the Tigers off the scoreboard. The two teams each put six shots on goal in the period. The Buckeyes were 0-for-1 on the power-play.

#Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres)# took an early penalty in the second period, leaving the Tigers a player down. However, the penalty kill did a good job to limit the Buckeyes' opportunities and kept the game scoreless. Midway through the period, Ally Tarr found herself alone in front of Tiger goalie #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)#, but fired her wrist shot wide of the net. With 14 seconds left in the period, the Buckeyes broke the scoreless tie. Ohio State won a face-off in the Tigers zone and Minttu Tuominen stuffed home a rebound to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission. Binnington made 14 saves in the period and Ohio State held a 15-11 advantage in shots.

Ohio State went on an early power-play for the second period in a row and again the Tigers refused to allow the Buckeyes to score. Moments after the penalty expired, #Melissa Bromley (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers)# fired a shot that missed the net wide as RIT looked to even the score. With just over 11 minutes remaining, #Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)# took a shot but Knapp would make the save to preserve her shutout. At the 9:51 mark, the Buckeyes added their second goal of the contest. Hokey Langan's shot beat Binnington for her fifth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Ohio State added a power-play goal from Tina Hollowell. The Tigers answered at the 11:38 mark as Bromley netted her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1. The goal was assisted by #Erin Zach (Elmira, Ontario/Cambridge Fury) and Katie Hubert (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)#. However, RIT couldn't pull any closer over the final eight-and-a-half minutes of play.

For the game, the Tigers went 0-for-3 on the power-play while Ohio State converted on one of their four power plays. Ohio State won 35 of 53 faceoffs on the evening.

Binnington finished with 29 saves and fell to 4-4-1 on the season. Knapp stopped 25 shots on the night.

The Tigers and Buckeyes complete their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. After that contest, RIT returns to CHA play as they host Lindenwood on Dec. 15 and 16. Those will be RIT's first home games since taking on Syracuse on Nov. 10.
