Women's hockey concludes seven-game road trip with loss at Ohio State



COLUMBUS, OH - The RIT women's hockey team (6-9-2) concluded its seven-game road trip by falling to Ohio State (14-5-1) 6-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers have now lost five straight contests. RIT concluded its seven-game road swing with a 2-5 mark.

Junior forward #Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) scored a goal and added an assist for the Tigers. (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers)Casidhe Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects)# also scored, while #Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy)# tallied an assist.  In goal, #Laura Chamberlain (Norco, CA/LA Selects)# started, stopping 10-of-13 shots over the first 24:09 before being replaced by #Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs)#. Binnington made 20 saves over the final 35:51.

Ally Tarr led the Buckeyes with two goals and an assist. Julia McKinnon scored a pair of goals, while Kim Thuet and Tina Hollowell also scored. Sara Schmitt dished out three assists. Chelsea Knapp stopped 16 shots in the win for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State was 3-for-5 with the man-advantage, while RIT was 0-for-4. RIT has allowed 10 power-play goals over the last four games.

RIT got on the board just 2:19 into the contest, as Casidhe Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) converted a perfect pass from her sister, Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) for her third goal of the season.

The Buckeyes responded with five straight tallies over the next three periods to take control of the contest. RIT mustered just one shot on goal in the second period, as the Buckeyes held an 18-1 edge in shots during that period.

Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/LA Selects) scored on a penalty shot with 10:24 left in regulation. An Ohio State defender covered the puck with her glove in the goal crease, leading to the penalty shot. The elder Kunichika converted on the penalty shot for her 97th career point. She is just three points shy of becoming the ninth player in RIT women's hockey history to reach 100.

Last night, the Buckeyes defeated RIT 3-1. Binnington made 29 saves in the loss, while #Melissa Bromley (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers)# scored RIT's lone goal.

RIT returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, hosting CHA rival Lindenwood University at Ritter Arena. Saturday's game begins at 7 p.m., while Sunday's contest starts at 2 p.m.
