Men's swimming and diving hangs on to defeat Alfred and move to 3-0

The RIT men's swimming and diving squad moved to 3-0 in dual meets this season after hanging on to defeat Alfred University (1-1) by a score of 148-146 on Saturday afternoon at Judson Pool. The Tigers won just five events on the afternoon, but swept all 32 diving points and had several top-three finishes.

RIT opened the afternoon with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as Scott Matchett (Rochester, NY/Brighton), Alex Madar (Suffern, NY/Suffern), Ryan Brannan (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), and Cory Deacon (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) were victorious by over a second in a time of 1:40.39.

That was the start of a great day for Madar, who won both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events for the Tigers. He won the 100-breast over teammates Peter Coutts (Statsburg, NY/F.D. Roosevelt High School) and Joe Meiman (Milford, NH/Milford) in a time of 1:03.35. Madar won the 200-breaststroke by just under three seconds, with Meiman second and Coutts third in 2:21.51.

John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) led the RIT diving sweep on the afternoon. He won the 3-meter over teammates Matt DePalo (Franklin, MA/Xaverian Brothers) and Billy Werksman (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) with a score of 283.05, then took the 1-meter in the same order of finish with a score of 275.25.

Matchett recorded a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.35 seconds and was also runner-up in the 200-backstroke (2:02.72), while Justin Morris (Marlborough, MA/Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School) was second in the 200-fly in 2:07.36.

Brannan recorded a second place finish in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.70 seconds) and 100-fly (53.91 seconds).

Matt Berus (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.69) and 500-free (5:09.79).

The Tigers are right back in action on Saturday with a home meet against St. Lawrence that gets underway at 1 p.m.
