ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's swimming and diving squad rolled to a 147-90 season-opening win over Oswego State on Wednesday evening at Judson Pool. The Tigers won nine events on the evening, including one relay and eight individual events.
RIT kicked off the evening with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of
Scott Matchett (Rochester, NY/Brighton),
Peter Coutts (Statsburg, NY/F.D. Roosevelt High School),
Ryan Brannan (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), and
Cory Deacon (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) defeated fellow RIT swimmers
Nate Marshall (Waverly, NY/Waverly),
Julius Jeong (Salisbury, MD/Wicomico),
Justin Morris (Marlborough, MA/Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School), and
Van Hopson (Norwich, NY/Norwich High School) by 2.5 seconds. The winning team crossed the line in 1:40.89.
Brannan took the 50-free by 12 hundredths of a second in a time of 22.23 seconds, then annexed the 100-fly by two seconds in 54.35 seconds. Morris and Allan Murillo were second and third, respectively, in the race.
Matt Berus (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:09.45, as Matchett was second in 2:12.35. Berus then took the 500-yard freestyle by seven seconds in a time of 5:10.87.
Scott Farrell (Buffalo, NY/North Tonawanda) took the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.11 seconds. Matchett and Marshall were 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke with Matchett winning in a time of 56.75 seconds with Marshall finishing in 58.20.
John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) and
Matt DePalo (Franklin, MA/Xaverian Brothers) were first and second in both diving events. Tellgren recorded a score of 250.60 in the 3-meter, while winning the 1-meter in 231.60.
