PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT baseball team (9-16, 2-6 Empire 8) dropped a pair of contests at nationally-ranked St. John FIsher (24-6, 12-2 Empire 8) on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers lost game one, 3-2, then dropped game two to the Cardinals, who are ranked 28th nationally, 7-2 at Dugan Yard.
In game one, Fisher broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases loaded, walk-off single by shortstop Chris Roeder.
RIT took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, as
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia), who singled to lead off, scored on a fielders choice ground out by
Ron Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols).
Fisher countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles by Ben Ward and Ben Bostick.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning, as
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) singled, stole second, and then scored on a base hit by
Jon Meyer (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland).
Smith and Bradley both finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Tigers. Ward was 2-for-2 woth two walks, a run scored, and run driven in for Fisher.
Tim Sylvester, who picked up a save and win yesterday. picked up another victory for the Cardinals, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Tim Johnson started, allowing six hits and two runs in six innings.
Brad Wright (Baldswinville, NY/C.W. Baker) started for RIT, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out three in 4 1/3 innings. #Joe; Walker# threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, while
Charles Yarrington (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) got the only batter he faced out in the sixth inning.
Dan Schuster (Livonia, NY/Livonia) took the loss, giving up two hits and a run in the seventh inning.
In game two, Fisher jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the victory. The big blow was a two-out grand slam by Leo Fusilli in the second inning.
RIT scored both its runs in the fourth inning, as Bradley reached on an error and Canestro singled. After a balk moved both runners up, Bradley scored on a groundout by Meyer and Canestro scored as
Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) reached on an error.
Chris Dickinson (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made his first start for the Tigers and allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings to get saddled with the loss.
Tyler Leichtenberger (Warren, PA/Warren Area) and
Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) combined to throw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Tigers.
Adam Petinella earned the win for Fisher, allowing one earned run in four innings. Ben Ward and Sean Osterman each recorded three hits and scored two runs for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals defeated RIT in a pair of games on Saturday, 7-5, and 4-3 in eight innings.
The Tigers returm to action on Tuesday, as they host Ithaca in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at RIT Field, but may move to Field of Dreams Park in Webster if there is inclement weather.
