Women's lacrosse loses overtime thriller to No. 9 Stevens

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (6-10, 5-3 E8) women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology (13-2, 8-0 E8) 14-10 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the loss, RIT is all but assured of a spot in the Empire 8 Tournament. It will be the third straight year the Tigers have qualified for the post-season tournament.

#Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led the Tigers with seven points on five goals and two assists. (Westwood, MA/Westwood)Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili)#, #Tina Podrasky (Scranton, PA/Wyoming Seminary) and Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)# each had a goal and an assist, while #Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) tallied a goal. (Westwood, MA/Westwood)Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)# took the loss in net, allowing 14 goals and making nine saves.

Michelle Buonacoure led Stevens with four goals. Christine Smith had three goals and Joey Galligan had two goals for the Ducks who end the regular season undefeated in the conference.

RIT took a 5-2 lead into halftime holding the Ducks scoreless for the first 15:27 of the game. Vakiener scored two goals in the first half and added an assist. Podrasky had an assist and scored with 1:15 remaining in the half to give the Tigers a three-goal advantage at the break.

Stevens scored three straight goals to open the second half, tying the score at 5-5 on a free position goal by Jenna Scheibling.

Lampson and Vakiener scored consecutive goals for RIT at 15:20 and 12:31 respectively to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead.

The Ducks answered with two straight goals at 11:10 and 8:30, tying the score on Buonacoure's second of the game at 7-7.

Vakiener scored with 3:27 remaining in the second half to give the Tigers a slim one goal lead at 9-8.

Stevens answered right back with two straight goals, taking their first lead of the game with 1:03 to play on a goal by Joey Galligan.

With time running out, Vakiener drove to the net and whistled a shot past Steven's Melanie Welcome tying the score at 10-10 with :25 seconds to play.

The Ducks controlled the two overtime sessions, scoring twice in the first overtime and twice in the second to secure the win.

Stevens outshot RIT 33-23 and won the ground balls battle 23-19. RIT won 9-of-28 draw controls and were 16-of-19 on clears. The Tigers converted just 1-of-7 free position opportunites, while the Ducks were 4-of-10.

RIT closes out the regular season next Thursday when they face SUNY Geneseo. Game time is 4 pm in Geneseo, New York.
