Women's Lacrosse loses 15-7 at Union in first round of Liberty League Tournament

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – RIT senior midfielder Kate Trojan scored three goals in the No. 7 Tigers 15-7 loss at No. 2 Union in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament, Wednesday.
 
Senior attack Zoe Heffernan had two assists and first year midfielder Abby Sekora, senior midfielder Grace Validzic and senior attack Jenna Bovenzi each scored a goal. First year defender Melia Wittlinger had three caused turnovers, and senior midfielder Eliza Barton won five draws. Senior goalie Ellie Ruddy made nine saves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Gillian Joseph and Maddy Schiller each scored early in the first quarter to give Union a 2-0 lead.
  • Jones scored a woman-up goal to cut Union's lead to 2-1 and Bovenzi tied the game 2-2 on her goal with 3:05 to play in the opening frame.
  • Joseph scored her second goal of the quarter to give the Garnett Chargers a 3-2 lead.
  • Union outscored RIT 7-1 in the second quarter to take a 10-3 halftime lead.
  • Sekora scored a woman-down goal with 6:02 remaining in the half that cut Union's lead to 5-3.
  • The Garnett Chargers scored the final five goals of the half, including one from Schiller as time expired in the half.
  • Joseph scored with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter to increase Union's lead to 11-3.
  • Schiller gave the Garnett Chargers a 12-3 lead on her goal midway through the quarter.
  • Trojan scored off an assist from Sodoma with 2:16 to play in the third to cut Union's lead to 12-4.
  • Joseph scored two straight goals in the fourth quarter to give Union a 14-4 lead.
  • Trojan scored to cut the deficit to 14-5 and again with 4:34 remaining to make it 14-6, Union.
  • Validzic scored with 2:58 remaining to make 14-7 before Bella Juliano scored to make it a 15-7 final.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Union, 33-30.
  • The Tigers won 11-of-23 draws and were 12-of-17 on clears.
  • RIT had 19 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.
