ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (7-11) baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision to the University of Rochester (8-12) in non-league action on Tuesday. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-11 on the season.
The score was tied 3-3 in the fifth inning when Rochester broke it open with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Trailing 11-4, the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead, but Rochester tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning and went on to the win.
Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) paced the Tigers going 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Senior
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and
Ronnie Canestro (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) went 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
Frank DiPinto (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) got the start for the Tigers. He went three innings allowing three runs on five hits and walked two.
Michael Burns (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) took the loss allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1/3 of an inning. In all five pitchers saw action for the Tigers.
RIT's big inning came in the top of the sixth.
Nick Ventura (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on an error on a hit by
Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg). After a
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) single loaded the bases, Ventura scored on fielder's choice off the bat of
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor).
Robertson plated the Tigers second run of the inning when Robertson stole home.
Later in the inning, with the bases loaded Bradley scored on a fielder's choice. Hughes plated
Jon Meyer (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) with an infield single as the Tigers scored four times in the inning on three hits.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 16 with a doubleheader versus Empire 8 foe Stevens. First pitch at RIT Field is at 1 pm.
